We often hear the term "sustainable" used in relation to environmentalism and green living. What does it really mean to be sustainable? Is it even possible for humans to achieve 100% sustainability?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sustainability as "the quality or state of being sustainable." But that's not very helpful, is it? A more useful definition of sustainability comes from the United Nations Brundtland Commission, which defines it as "meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
In other words, sustainability is about finding a balance between meeting our own needs as individuals and as a society while also ensuring that future generations will be able to do the same. It's important to remember that sustainability is not an all-or-nothing proposition; rather, it's a journey that we are all on together. And while we may never achieve 100% sustainability, every step we take towards that goal is a positive one.
